| 1. Keep floors one level and always ensure gradual thresholds between different flooring types.
2. During bathroom design, request plywood backing behind tile walls. This will allow for secure grab bar attachments at varying heights. 3. Select hardware that does not slip when soapy. For example, a lever- type handle is usually easy to grab and control. 4. Doorway width opening should be 32 inches. 5. Paint colours should not be too dark with little contrast. 6. Provide thermostat and lighting switch heights between 36 inches to 44 inches above the finished floor. 7. Provide a lot of lighting at different heights and light levels. 8. Kitchen planning should allow counters to have clear space of 27 inches from the floor to the underside of the countertop in work-preparation areas. 9. Ensure closet rails and shelves are installed at accessible heights. 10. Design the kitchen using appliances that are more accessible, such as drawer-type refrigerator units which fit in islands or units that are compact enough to fit in more than one location. 11. Provide a clear space in front of windows for easy opening. 12. Provide a five-foot minimum turning radius in all areas, including corridors, bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. |
