Editor
The editor works closely with the BCS group publisher to edit and manage a number of magazines and newsletters for the Canadian health care field.
Your primary role is to develop and research story ideas, solicit articles from health care professionals, edit stories and copy, and write feature articles and other departments as needed. You are motivated and have an impressive track record. You enjoy producing quality work and are skilled in writing and editing for a variety of audiences.
You are also a hands-on, high energy team player with superior communication skills who is comfortable multi-tasking and managing workflow on a number of projects. You are aware of readers’ and advertisers’ needs and are willing to work closely with sales staff to meet departmental goals without compromising editorial integrity.
BCS Communications has 12 employees and has been in business for 40 years.
Responsibilities
As a member of the BCS team, you will
• Edit three quarterly BCS magazines (trade and consumer) and their websites: Solutions, Rehab & Community Care Medicine, and Today’s Kids in Motion.
• Develop and execute the editorial for each title in close collaboration with the group publisher.
• Edit, proofread and fact-check copy for all sections of each magazine.
• Research and write articles for both departments and features
sections as needed.
• Oversee the work of an editorial assistant and in-house graphic designers.
• Develop schedules for each title and manage the process from concept to pre-press.
• Find new ways to engage each title’s audience and build deeper relationships with readers, both in print and online.
• Edit magazine content to update publication websites on a timely basis.
• Create e-newsletters and other online initiatives to support print publications.
• Assist with editing content for a number of contract and custom publications.
• Collaboratively develop new project ideas and client leads.
Required qualifications
• Three to five years’ editorial experience in magazine publishing
• Experience in health care communications
• Post-secondary degree plus editorial training (substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading are a minimum)
• Editing and proofreading with an excellent knowledge of grammar.
• Excellent project management and organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
• A flair for writing concise, accurate copy to tight deadlines, and an ability to adjust writing style to both professional and lay audiences.
• Proven ability to generate ideas for feature issues and sponsored sections.
• Knowledge of design and layout, with an eye for consistency of style.
• Experience working with Macintosh systems and software (including QuarkXPress, Photoshop) to edit online, flow in text, and crop and place photographs when required.
• Experience in updating content to websites (via HTML/CSS or Dreamweaver and knowledge of web publishing (e.g., blogs, RSS feeds)
• Experience working with external clients and suppliers.

• Ability to set and manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.
